How far along?  I am 39 weeks. . . or I would be, if I were still pregnant. She is 5 days old.
Size of baby: At her appointment yesterday, she was 6 pounds 8.5 ounces and 19.5 inches long.
Sleep: I have been sleeping much better since my parents are in town and are taking the night shifts while she's awake and fussy. The first two nights with this little one were rough. Jacob and I basically took turns holding her all night because she would cry every time we set her down. She sleeps really well in her swing (or in someone's arms) during the day and is much more alert at night.
Total weight gain: I haven't been on a scale since my last OB appointment, but I imagine I've lost at least 6 pounds since last week. She lost an ounce in the hospital, but is already back up to her birthweight, give or take half an ounce.
Unglamorous body changes: I have accumulated a second degree tear and a tendency to leak fluid from various orifices. She is just as beautiful today as the day she was born. Maybe more so, since she's not so squashed looking.
Best moment this week: I had the chance to meet our baby girl and have been soaking up every moment ever since. She has been loving the attention from her parents and grandparents. Or at least I like to think so.
Movement: I have been waddling like a penguin, though it's getting easier to walk around and stand from a sitting position as time goes by. She is pretty squirmy and continues to get the hiccups several times a day, just like her momma.
Food cravings/aversions: I had a delicious milkshake last night. She can't get enough of the good stuff.
Symptoms: I haven't had heartburn since her birth, for which I am grateful. (And perhaps there is something to the whole "heartburn = hairy baby" wives' tale.) I've also been incredibly hungry and thirsty. She doesn't have a sign of jaundice!
Currently looking forward to: I am looking forward to snuggling with my baby, General Conference, and possibly seeing my cousin this weekend. She probably doesn't have a care in the world right now.
Realization of the week: We have a baby! And we get to keep her!
Milestones: I am starting to get the hang of nursing and diaper changes. She had her umbilical cord fall off yesterday.
Other tidbits: I'm not so sure what to do with this blog now that our daughter has arrived. Also, this:

How far along? 38 weeks.
Size of baby: She's probably put on another four ounces or so since last week and is the same length as before. She may be the size of a pumpkin, which I find hard to believe. My doctor said she's measuring around the 47th percentile for most of the measurements from the ultrasound, except for her abdomen, which is in the 20th percentile, and her head, which is in the 74th percentile. So we're going to have a skinny baby with a big head?
Sleep: Aaaand we're back to waking up in the middle of the night to use the loo. Also, waking up at 5:30 for work is a thing of the past. These days I'm lucky to roll out of bed by 6:10.
Total weight gain: About +22 pounds.
Unglamorous body changes: I've noticed some skin tags in a couple spots on my body that definitely weren't there a few months ago. Fingers crossed that they go away on their own.
Best moment this week: This week has kind of dragged, to be honest. Does making it to the weekend count as the best moment? Oh, yesterday Jacob and I watched Cool Runnings, which was fun. I requested it from the library before the Olympics started in hopes of celebrating even further, but apparently everyone else in the library system had the same idea, so we didn't get the movie until this week.
Movement: I think she had the hiccups earlier today. No other changes from before, really.
Food cravings/aversions: Perhaps ice cream. I wish I had some right this moment!
Symptoms: My stomach has been itchy and I've been more tired lately. On a happier note, heartburn hasn't really been much of an issue this week. I thiiink I've been having some contractions on and off, but I'm not exactly sure what those are supposed to feel like. Sharp cramps in the nether regions? Lower back pain? If so, I've got 'em. My fingers have been swollen; I haven't been able to take off my ring all week.
Currently looking forward to: A snack of sorts. I'm feeling peckish.
Realization of the week: This baby could come any day now! I've been counting down the days of school in terms of how many "wake ups" there are -- this morning, I thought "ten more wake ups (of school days) until my due date!", since waking up is the hardest part of the day. And then I realized that I'm going to be waking up a lot more frequently and feeling a lot more tired in the very near future.
Milestones: I've finished most of my sub plans! I've had to stay at school until almost 5 the last two days, I met with the sub after school today and went over how I generally run things and the locations of my teacher manuals and copies and such. He should be able to cover for me in a pinch, even though I'm not completely finished with plans.
Other tidbits: At my doctor's appointment on Wednesday, I was 3 cm dilated, 80% effaced, and baby girl was at a -2 station. He said I might not make it to my next appointment. We'll see if that's the case! I keep thinking things like, "If I'm like my sister, I'll have this baby by Wednesday. If I'm like Sister So-and-So, I'll be a week overdue." I suppose we ought to pack our hospital bag just in case.

How far along? 37 weeks.
Size of baby: Yesterday I had an ultrasound which estimated that she's 6.2 pounds (or possibly 6 pounds, 2 ounces). I asked the tech if she could tell how long she is, but apparently that isn't possible since she's all curled up. What I should have asked is how big her head is. (And she should be the size of a winter melon, whatever that means.)
Sleep: I get tired relatively early. The quality of sleep has been about the same, but I've had a hard time waking up in the morning this week.
Total weight gain: +21 pounds.
Unglamorous body changes: Half of my belly button seems to pop out, depending on how I'm sitting.
Best moment this week: Quite a few good things happened this week, actually. Monday Jacob and I had dinner with my former roommate and her family. Wednesday was our Pinterest party, which we altered into a movie night with lots of delicious snacks and a chick flick. Yesterday we had an ultrasound, and while we weren't able to get the clearest images since baby girl is so crowded, we were able to see that she has a fair amount of hair and that everything still seems to be developing correctly. Today my work threw me a baby shower and we received a baby swing in addition to some other great things.
Movement: She doesn't kick so much as squirm these days. She's running out of room, and I often try to push her out of my ribs.
Food cravings/aversions: Just food in general. Junk food, when it's available.
Symptoms: Heartburn, of course. An achey back now and again. Pain in the nether regions which makes me suspect I am very much going to take them up on that epidural, given the chance.
Currently looking forward to: A slice of leftover baby shower cake. I don't even usually like cake. But here we are.
Realization of the week: I continue to be amazed by the generosity of others. I hope one day to be in a position where I can be just as generous to somebody else.
Milestones: I'm now considered full term! This baby could potentially come any day now. Though I do hope she'll wait until my sub plans are finished. (I have started them, finally. But just barely.)
Other tidbits: Everyone keeps asking if we've picked a name yet. No, no we have not. I was under the impression that we had narrowed it down to two names, but yesterday Jacob suggested that we think of other names to consider. I don't think we'll have a name until after she's born.

How far along? 36 weeks.
Size of baby: Now the size of a honeydew, she's anywhere from 17.2 to over 19 inches long and 4.2 and 6.5 pounds. It depends on which source of information you trust. And, you know, variation among babies at this stage.
Sleep: Through the power of a Christmas miracle (and possibly through limiting fluid intake in the evening), I've actually been able to have a few nights this week where I didn't have to get up to go to the bathroom. Of course, those nights I still woke up at least once or twice to roll over. Apparently I no longer have the ability to shift positions in my sleep.
Total weight gain: Still about +20 pounds. Maybe more like +20.5.
Unglamorous body changes: Oh, the hangnails!
Best moment this week: Today I had the day off work to compensate for staying late Wednesday and Thursday for Parent Teacher Conferences, so that was glorious. And just a little while ago we had some friends over to celebrate Pi Day. We sang "American Pie" (well, the wives did; afterward the husbands sang along to the Weird Al Star Wars version) and had some delicious definitely-not-homemade chocolate pie.
Movement: Last night in bed I had my stomach against Jacob's back as we were falling asleep. After a while, Jacob told me to tell the baby to stop kicking because he could feel it and it was keeping him awake. The impressive (?) thing is that I hadn't even noticed she was moving until he mentioned that. I suppose I'm getting used to her movements if that's the case.
Food cravings/aversions: Cookie dough. I've found a couple of eggless recipes for cookie dough and I'm so tempted to make a batch and eat it straight.
Symptoms: Nesting has kicked into gear. Today we set up the Pack 'n' Play, installed the car seat (although we still need to get it inspected by a car seat technician), assembled the stroller, and did a fair amount of cleaning. And I still ended up getting angsty about how much work we still have to do before the baby room is ready. I've also been a little more tired and my lower back has been hurting off and on.
Currently looking forward to: Cleaning out the closets and finishing the baby's room. As well as finishing (which requires starting) my sub plans. When those things are done, I'll feel much more prepared for this baby's arrival!
Realization of the week: The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. (Why yes, I did have to Google that quote to remember its entirety.)
Milestones: We have four weeks left until my due date. Which means only 20 days of school (assuming I don't go over). That's crazy talk! At my doctor's appointment today, we discovered that baby girl is indeed head down, and I'm about 50% effaced and 1/2 centimeter dilated. So it doesn't look like I'll be going into labor anytime soon, which is fine by me.
Other tidbits: My coworker gave me a gift on March 11th to celebrate the fact that my due date was exactly one month away. One, that was very thoughtful and generous of her, and two, I'm impressed she remembered I only had a month left on that date!

How far along? 35 weeks 1 day.
Size of baby: Now the size of a coconut, she may be up to 18 inches and 6 pounds.
Sleep: I've given up on the idea of getting a full night's sleep until after baby girl arrives and is also able to sleep through the night. Which might not be for ages. My bladder just doesn't have the capacity to make it more than five or six hours without being emptied.
Total weight gain: +20 or so pounds.
Unglamorous body changes: I've been in denial, but I think my linea nigra (the darkening vertical line of skin on the belly) is starting to make an appearance. Also, this isn't necessarily unglamorous, but I do believe I'm producing colostrum (TMI?).
Best moment this week: Not having school yesterday was nice. And I think I've finished report cards, so that's good.
Movement: Oh, nothing new to report in this area. I've noticed increased movement after eating cold foods and beverages, and she still moves mostly while I'm laying down. And she still crowds my ribs several times a day.
Food cravings/aversions: Nothing, really.
Symptoms: I'm a little more tired than usual. Sometimes I get a little light-headed and/or headache-y.
Currently looking forward to: Being done with Parent-Teacher Conferences. Wednesday and Thursday are going to be long days.
Realization of the week: Recently Jacob has been asking more questions about baby girl's pending arrival, such as what we need to bring to the hospital and what else we need to get ready before she comes. I'm glad I have such a supportive husband, and I know he's going to be a great dad!
Milestones: Last Saturday Jacob and I parked in a "Reserved for Expectant Mothers" parking spot for the first time. I was wearing a sweatshirt and made an effort to stick out my stomach just in case other patrons suspected us of abusing the privilege.
Other tidbits: We assembled our crib last weekend! If we have time today, we might work on the baby's room some more and possibly install the carseat.

How far along? 34 weeks 2 days.
Size of baby: She may be about 17.5 inches long and up to 5.5 pounds. She's the size of a butternut squash.
Sleep: The quality of sleep has definitely declined this week. I'm sure part of it has been due to my cold, but every night I've woken up at least once (which means more like two or three times) because I couldn't breathe or because I was thirsty or because I had to relieve my bladder. A couple times I've been in bed by 9 or 9:30, and at least I did feel more rested the following mornings. Last Saturday night was the worst of all, though -- I started getting heartburn around 7:30 in the evening, and antacid tablets didn't help at all. It lasted basically until 6:30 in the morning, and I slept maaaybe two or three hours because of it. Jacob gave me a blessing when he got home from work, and I was able to sleep another few hours afterward. But it was pretty miserable.
Total weight gain: I haven't been on a scale in at least two weeks.
Unglamorous body changes: My face has been extra oily this week.
Best moment this week: Friday Jacob and I went on a date to Pizza Pie Cafe and then came home and watched How to Train Your Dragon. It was delightful.
Movement: I now feel her moving more towards my back than my belly, which makes me suspect she's turned around somehow (I still can't visualize her location in relation to me). It's a little strange feeling movements along my intestines. This also means I don't see her movements from the outside as often.
Food cravings/aversions: Nothing in particular.
Symptoms: Oh, you know. Heartburn. Thankfully, it hasn't been as bad the last few days. My lower back gets achey more often, and I've had some intermittent pain in the right side of my stomach, which kind of feels like a pulled muscle or something. I've been getting some mild headaches in the afternoons, but they haven't been too bad. And I've been getting hot flashes. Lest anyone get the wrong idea, overall I'm doing really well. I don't want to seem like a whinerpants when really this pregnancy has been quite easy.
Currently looking forward to: Going to bed early tonight. And I'm crossing my fingers that I can actually sleep through the night.
Realization of the week: A few weeks ago I had a dream that I went into labor while on a field trip. This week I learned that we're now signed up for a field trip on April 8th -- 3 days before my due date. Oh, how I hope this dream doesn't come true! Jacob thinks I should opt out of going. I don't think I have that power unless I've already given birth. But I definitely need to get a plan in place "just in case".
Milestones: During the Worst Heartburn Episode Ever, around 3:30 in the morning, I had the thought "I don't want to be pregnant anymore!" for the first time. And then I felt immediately guilty because I'm incredibly grateful to even have this opportunity to be pregnant, and I know of others who desperately wish that they had this chance, too.
Other tidbits: Baby girl can now start recognizing and reacting to songs that I sing. Apparently, she may find some of those songs soothing after birth. Which makes me reconsider singing along to the radio when gems such as "Poker Face" come on.

How far along? 33 weeks.
Size of baby: The size of a durian fruit (which I had to Google, because I don't think I've ever heard of it before), she's now about 17 inches long and 5 pounds.
Sleep: Well, I've had to get up in the middle of the night almost every day this week to use the loo, so there's that. This morning Jacob put his arm around my belly to cuddle, and after about three minutes of that I had to move his arm off because it was squishing me and 'twas all sorts of uncomfortable. Once I get out of bed in the morning, I feel slightly off-balance as well. And of course, by the time 10:00 rolls around I'm yawning and exhausted, but I've had to force myself to stay awake to finish watching the Olympics. Priorities.
Total weight gain: I don't know. I'm trying not to worry about it too much.
Unglamorous body changes: I can no longer see my toes when I stand up straight and look down. Jacob said that my belly has become a weapon (I maaaay or may not have bumped into him multiple times in a short period of time.) Shaving my legs has definitely become a more complicated endeavor. (Not that I shave more than once a week, anyway . . . )My belly button has recently become a fascination with Jacob as well, who wants to Pillsbury me every chance he gets.
Best moment this week: Oh, this week has been full of excitement. I had my baby shower on Saturday (which deserves a post of its own), and that was a lot of fun. I used a voucher I received for Christmas to get a massage on Monday, and our crib arrived on Tuesday. We still haven't assembled it, but our neighbor used his truck to help us donate a bunch of stuff to DI -- including an organ which was taking up far too much space -- and Jacob rearranged the furniture in our living room so it's more open. (Next step: acquiring a wireless adapter for our computer so we can move it to the living room and make room for the crib.) And today, Jacob and I received some news we've been waiting for ages to hear! But . . . I'm not allowed to share it on the Internets yet. You may tingle with anticipation.
Movement: She continues to enjoy wedging herself behind my ribs. She also gets more active after I've had some sugar. Imagine that.
Food cravings/aversions: No real cravings, but I have definitely indulged in my share of chocolate this week.
Symptoms: Heartburn has returned with a vengeance, and this time it doesn't even have the courtesy of waiting until the evening or after a meal to strike. The phrase "lightning crotch" also comes to mind these days. Not frequently, but when it does . . . ouch. I may or may not have yelped this evening after one such episode, which caused Jacob some alarm.
Currently looking forward to: Finding my Blistex. I haven't seen it in days, and my lips are parched!
Realization of the week: Our apartment is definitely not baby-proof. At least we'll have a few months to get it in order before she gets mobile.
Milestones: She's keeping her eyes open while she's awake now, and the bones of her skull are formed. She's also going through more major brain development, and she's coordinating breathing with sucking and swallowing. Also, in four weeks I'll be considered full term, which kind of blows my mind. Less than 50 days until my due date.
Other tidbits: I think I'm starting to get a cold. Bah humbag.

Friday, February 14, 2014

How far along? 32 weeks.
Size of baby: One source says she's the size of a squash and is between 15.2 to 16.7 inches and weighs up to 3.8 pounds. Another source says she's 16.5 inches and 4.5 pounds. I'm not sure which one is more reliable.
Sleep: Last night I had a dream that I went into labor while on a field trip and had my entire class accompany me to the hospital to be present for the birth. I never did make it to the birthing part in my dream, but it was terrifying. Not something I want an audience for!
Total weight gain: Up something like 18 pounds. Or 22, if you're going by my doctor's records. I don't want to talk about it.
Unglamorous body changes: My belly button is barely a dimple now and turns into an outie if I bend backward. And I think I just discovered my first stretch mark on my belly. At least it's tiny. But this does not inspire confidence for the next 8 weeks!
Best moment this week: Wednesday my friends and I had our monthly Pinterest party. While that's always a highlight in and of itself, they completely surprised me with an unexpected mini baby shower! We take turns providing dinner and dessert, so they planned a menu fitting for a baby shower, had pink decorations (I was completely oblivious and thought they were for Valentine's day), and gave me some gifts. It was so thoughtful of them! I do have great friends.
Movement: I still feel her mostly when I'm laying down, right before bed or right when I wake up, but she's also taken to moving whenever I rest something against my belly. Such as piles of papers to grade. Or my arms.
Food cravings/aversions: Mostly food in general. The other night after dinner and two after-dinner snacks, I was still hungry. I asked Jacob to make some suggestions of what I could eat, and when he mentioned fruit cocktail, I wanted that right away. I saw a recipe for homemade granola on Pinterest early this week and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since. I may have to attempt to make it this weekend. Also, I do wish I had some ice cream right about now.
Symptoms: In a cruel twist of fate, over the weekend my bowels decided to have the opposite issue as I had the week prior. Let's just say that Jacob has probably never heard me speak as much about my bowel movements (or lack thereof) as he did these last two weeks. At least things worked themselves out without the "bleeding, tearing, and tears" I was fearing. Aaaaaaand that's enough of that subject.
Currently looking forward to: My baby shower tomorrow! I'll be able to see family and friends that I haven't seen in months. And some other family and friends that I've seen in the last week. It should be fun. I have Monday off as well, and Jacob and I are going to have our Valentine's celebration then, so that's something else to look forward to.
Realization of the week: I don't think I've had any profound realizations this week. Or if I have, I've already forgotten them. Oh well.
Milestones: Supposedly she is in (or will be approaching) the head down position, but I can't really tell if she is or not. I still feel movement in the same places as usual but I've had significantly fewer instances of heartburn, so who knows?
Other tidbits: We finally bought a crib yesterday. We don't have it in our possession, but it should arrive in a couple weeks. I will feel much more prepared once it's assembled!

Saturday, February 8, 2014

How far along? 31 weeks 1 day.
Size of baby: Now the size of a pineapple (delicious), she should be around 16 inches and 4 pounds. Though I'm not sure how much I believe that, because that's a jump of a whole pound in one week's time and the Internets say she'll pack on a half pound a week from here on out.
Sleep: My bedtime is now 10:00. The last two nights I've stayed up later than that (because of the Olympics, of course!), and I had to draaaaag myself off the couch to go to bed. I've been trying to sleep on my side, as recommended, but I often wake up on my back. Hopefully I'm not causing irreparable damage to our baby. When I do wake up, I have to carefully stretch my legs because it feels like they'll seize up with horrible cramps if I don't. I'm still sleeping really well, overall.
Total weight gain: When I checked a few days ago, I was up 16 pounds.
Unglamorous body changes: You may be tired of hearing about my chilblains, but the ones on my fingers are particularly swollen, unsightly, and painful this week. What's the deal, man? I've never had them on my fingers before this year. My face also broke out a little bit at the start of the week.
Best moment this week: Heather was able to come over for the Olympics opening ceremony celebration. It was only a party of two, but we had delicious foodstuffs and had fun talking and openly mocking the US team's hideous sweaters. Really, now, must we force our athletes to wear something that looks like Bill Cosby would've worn to an ugly sweater party?
Movement: Today when Jacob came home from work and I was still snoozing, he asked how the baby was doing. I replied that I assumed she was fine, but that I couldn't feel her moving. As he continued talking to me, though, she started moving around, and Jacob was able to feel her squirm. Perhaps it was coincidental, but I like to think she recognized her daddy's voice and was happy to hear him. Also, baby girl is not afraid to get all up in my ribs, particularly on the right side. Several times I've felt my belly get really hard, and I thought she was just pushing out on my abdomen, but now I'm wondering if I've been experiencing those Braxton Hicks contractions everyone talks about. They don't hurt, but it's slightly uncomfortable.
Maternity clothes: This question is getting silly. Perhaps I'll replace it with another next week. I'm still wearing maternity pants, but I can get by with my regular shirts.
Food cravings/aversions: I made some Olympic onion rings for our party last night, and I'm looking forward to making the other half of the batch tonight because they were so delicious. Pinterest is also a little dangerous, because I see all these delicious-looking recipes and I want to try them right away. Not that I have, though.
Symptoms: I've had a lot less heartburn this week, which is glorious. I don't know if you'd call this nesting, but lately I've had the urge to throw away or otherwise get rid of everything in our second bedroom's closet. Which still looks nothing like a nursery. I'm starting to get a little anxious that we aren't going to get it ready in time -- especially after reading in a book that you should order the crib by 25 weeks to make sure it arrives in time. I've also been getting angsty whenever our apartment is messy (which, let's face it, usually happens during the week), but Jacob has been good about helping me restore it to an acceptable level of cleanliness. In other news, I've experienced some cramp-like pain in my sides a couple times this week, usually when rolling over in bed. And (TMI alert), a couple days this week my bowels have been quite unhappy when I've woken up in the morning.
Currently looking forward to: Sitting on my fanny while I watch athletes perform amazing accomplishments of strength and agility for the next two weeks.
Realization of the week: I have to make sub plans for six weeks! That's a terrible idea! It usually takes at least two hours to leave plans when I'm gone for just one day -- I can't even imagine how long it'll take to prepare six weeks' worth of plans. And let's not mention the fact that I rarely am planned more than a week in advance at any rate.
Milestones: The countdown in weeks is now in the single digits. Oh snap!
Other tidbits: Baby girl is sleeping about 90 percent of the day and is going through major brain development at this time. All five of her senses are in working order, though she can't smell anything yet. And she's getting less wrinkly as she gets more fat deposits. Good thing, too -- we wouldn't want a wrinkly baby, now would we?

How far along? 30 weeks.
Size of baby: The produce comparison this week is absurd. Apparently, she's now the size of a cucumber. I'm just imagining this super long and skinny string bean of a baby. She should be about 15.5 inches long and 3 pounds.
Sleep: I've been going to bed a little earlier than usual because I've been tired. The first few days this week, I had no probably getting out of bed. The last two days have been a struggle. Still having weird dreams, and I woke up once last night, but overall, I've been sleeping fine.
Total weight gain: Unsure.
Unglamorous body changes: This is not a change, but according to the secretary at school, I still don't have a butt. This is true.
Best moment this week: Jacob and I went on a date up in Midway, about an hour from our apartment. First we went on a horse-drawn sleigh ride, which has been on my bucket list for years. I thought it was charmingly delightful; Jacob says he'll never spend money on something like that again. Then we went to the ice castle, which was also pretty cool.
Movement: I'm feeling her more often during the day, and she's still most active right before I go to bed. Early this week Jacob and I were in bed reading scriptures and I had to stop him to show how my belly was making waves. It was fascinating and creepy at the same time.
Maternity clothes: No change from last week.
Food cravings/aversions: Right now I wish I had a cheesecake. I've also been dipping into my candy stash after work recently. And I may or may not have just had a piece of toast spread with leftover frosting. I am not ashamed.
Symptoms: I've been a lot more tired this week. I wanted to take a nap after work today, but to no avail. I may turn in by 9. Or 8:30, if I'm super grandma-ish.
Currently looking forward to: The Olympics! I can hardly wait! We're going shopping tomorrow for groceries, including for our traditional opening ceremony celebration dinner. I'm also looking forward to having food in the house again. My lunches have been a little bleak this week.
Realization of the week: The actual hospital bill may be cheaper than I was anticipating. Of course, our insurance plan is going to roll over before my due date, so that may change things, but if we really only have to pay what the insurance website estimates, that will not be too shabby!
Milestones: Only ten weeks to go! Unless I go over. Heather is hoping I hold out until April 16th, the day after tax day. At this point, I'd be okay with that (fewer days I'd have to take unpaid if I end up not going back after maternity leave), but I may change my tune come the end of March. Also, not that I'm counting, but I also have fewer than 50 days of work left if I deliver on my due date.
Other tidbits: I still don't know whether I have gestational diabetes or not. I'm assuming I don't, since my doctor said they call in the abnormal scores first and it's been a week since my screening. So I'm going to continue to eat whatever I please (within reason, of course). (Edit: My test results finally came back! My value was well below the cutoff mark for the 3 hour diagnostic test. Hooray for not having diabetes!)

How far along? 29 weeks.
Size of baby: Now the size of an acorn squash, she's about 15 inches long and 2.5 lbs.
Sleep: I've been sleeping pretty well, but I've definitely noticed a drop in energy this week. Wednesday after work I came home, laid down, and very well could have fallen asleep if Jacob hadn't made me get up after a half hour rest. Last night I slept about ten hours and was still pretty tired when I woke up.
Total weight gain: Roughly +14 pounds.
Unglamorous body changes: Nothing noticeable.
Best moment this week: Can we say three day work week? And I was surprisingly productive on my day off today, which is good.
Movement: She's getting more active during the day. I felt her at work a few times, which I haven't really noticed before.
Maternity clothes: Nothing new. Maternity pants are a must. Tops, not so much.
Food cravings/aversions: Peanut butter and chocolate. This week I've had peanut butter and chocolate chip toast, ants on a log, and today I made these chocolate and peanut butter oat bars that I found on Pinterest and just had to try. They're delish, in case you were wondering. I've already had three. Maybe four.
Symptoms: Heartburn: Jacob was a peach and picked up some antacid tablets this evening, so I'm hoping those help. Clumsiness: I dropped my phone at least three times in one day, in addition to dropping keys, papers, and various other items. Forgetfulness: Tuesday I forgot my badge that lets me into the school and had to go back home to get it. I haven't done that since the first month of work last year. Today I went to HR to talk to someone about maternity leave, and when she asked for my social security number, I first started giving my phone number, then Jacob's social, before I finally remembered my own. And numerous times I've walked to the copy room, made some copies, walked back to my room, and then remembered something else I meant to make a copy of.
Currently looking forward to: A hot date with the mista tomorrow afternoon. Although since it'll be outdoors, it'll be more like a cold date. Better bundle up!
Realization of the week: I found out that I only get 22 days of paid maternity leave. I was hoping for 30. This may complicate things. Also, homegirl needs a haircut. Things are starting to look scraggly.
Milestones: On Wednesday one teacher asked me if anyone has touched my stomach yet, to which I responded in the negative. The next day, a different teacher made a move to touch my belly while making a comment about how small I am. I was wearing a sweatshirt, so I don't think she actually felt anything, but I'm still counting it as my first unsolicited belly rub.
Other tidbits: I had my glucose screening test today. The drink wasn't as bad as I was anticipating. I'll find out Monday whether I need to come back for the three hour test -- fingers crossed I don't! I also received the TDap vaccine today. Perhaps all those injections I received this summer desensitized me, but I barely felt anything during the shot. Glory be. (I'm sure it helped that it was a thinner needle and not an intramuscular injection, ha.)

How far along? 28 weeks 1 day.
Size of baby: Baby girl is the size of an eggplant, just under 15 inches long and weighing about 2.25 lbs.
Sleep: A few times this week I went to bed later than usual, so I've been more tired this week. The actual sleeping part has been fine, for the most part, save some crazy dreams. As usual. But yesterday morning I woke up with the most painful charley horse in my left calf. I think I freaked Jacob out a little with the crying, incoherent babbling, and frantic gesturing toward my leg. He massaged it out, but my leg is still sore today.
Total weight gain: If I go to the gym today, I'll weigh myself and update it here. No promises, though. (Edit: Still at +13.)
Unglamorous body changes: My belly button continues to both amaze and weird me out. I poke it daily.
Best moment this week: My friends and I had our monthly Pinterest party this week. I've had to deal with some drama at work this week, so it was nice to get away from that and eat delicious food and make a craft and laugh and such. It was good for my soul.
Movement: Jacob is able to feel her pretty consistently when she moves, now. If her current activity patterns are any indication, we're going to have a night owl on our hands.
Maternity clothes: I finally buckled down and bought two pairs of maternity pants for work. I almost gave up when I went shopping on Saturday because apparently I'm a moron who lacks the ability to read mall maps and couldn't find the store for the longest time. But then I thought about facing another week of work wearing my other pants and pressed on. The angels sang on Monday when I got dressed that morning and didn't have to attempt to squeeze into pants that no longer fit. (Although I discovered that one pair doesn't have any pockets -- after I cut off the tags, of course -- which is a little annoying.)
Food cravings/aversions: I made these cookies for our Pinterest party, and I'm ashamed to admit how many of them I've consumed since. They are so delicious. Go try them. Right now.
Symptoms: I had some hot flashes at work this week, which was a little odd. (Side note: They finally fixed the heat in my room on Wednesday. Glory be!) Jacob and I went to the temple last night and toward the end I was starting to feel a little light-headed. I've caught myself a little short of breath (awkward feeling the need to pause to get enough air while giving a spelling test), and let's not mention the awful hormonal breakdown I had yesterday after work. I won't go into details, but it involved weeping, wailing, and shuddering sobs. It was ugly.
Currently looking forward to: Sleeping in tomorrow and Monday. Huzzah for three day weekends! And eating more of those cookies . . .
Realization of the week: From a teacher's standpoint, I think I'm going to be an awesome parent. By which I mean I hope that I'll show appreciation for our children's teachers and volunteer in helpful ways. Also, I certainly don't want to be a helicopter parent, and if issues do arise, I hope I'll be able to see them from multiple viewpoints.
Milestones: I'm officially in the third trimester! At this point, baby girl can now recognize my voice. I feel a little silly talking to her, but Jacob has taken to telling her not to be as emotional as her mother. Ha.
Other tidbits: Several people at work have asked me what my plans are after the baby is born. I've told them that I'm hoping to stay home, but I'll come back for financial reasons if necessary. I really hope it isn't necessary . . . after waiting this long to have a baby, I don't want somebody else to raise her! Currently, Jacob and I are thinking that I can sub on his days off to make some extra income. I think that should suffice, but it's going to be a lot harder to save up for a down payment on a house with only one main income.

How far along? 27 weeks.
Size of baby: Now the size of a rutabaga (which I'm pretty sure I have never seen in real life before), she is approximately 14.5 inches and 2 pounds.
Sleep: I've actually been sleeping better this week. Perhaps going back to work was good for me? I have been getting leg cramps in the middle of the night, but if I'm careful they aren't too bad.
Total weight gain: I'm sure there's been some increase from last week. I just don't know by how much.
Unglamorous body changes: You may not care about my chilbs, but they have now spread to my fingers. My pinky is all sorts of swollen and my ring fingers are itchy. Also, I've been unable to remove my ring for my shower for the first time in my life. I didn't expect this ailment to come for a couple more months, at least.
Best moment this week: Perhaps just chillin' and watching Invincible with Jacob yesterday evening. I didn't have much grading to work on, so I cross stitched (I know, that makes me sound terribly old ladyish) as we watched the movie. It was relaxing.
Movement: She's gotten in a couple rather strong kicks -- once in the bladder, which was a surprise -- a few times this week. I still feel her mostly in the evenings, right before I go to bed. She's had an increasing amount of some spasm-y flutters, so I don't really know what she's doing in there.
Maternity clothes: Remember that time I had two full weeks off of work for Christmas break? I was woefully unprepared to return to the world of semi-professional dress this week. Allow me to share with you my pants debacle: Monday I wore the maternity pants I bought from DI. They worked, in a sense, but since the elastic around the waist is all stretched out, I had to keep hitching them up every five minutes. And then they ended up dragging in the snow on the way to the car after work, so they were all sorts of filthy and unfit for wearing the rest of the week. Tuesday I wore my pair of black pants paired with the belly band. Since they don't zip up all the way, I was praying they wouldn't fall down in front of the class. AND THEY NEARLY DID. At the end of the day, I was holding them up with one hand while high-fiving my students with the other. I went to the library after work to pick up a book I needed for an upcoming lesson, and when I came home I was unable to carry in my books, roll my teacher crate, and hold my pants up at the same time. (Fortunately, Jacob came home at the same time and was able to take my stuff in for me so I could hold my pants up and not expose myself to the neighbors.) Wednesday I wore a different pair of pants, and the first thing my coworker said to me was "you're unzipped." Thursday I finally wised up and put a safety pin under the zipper after zipping my pants as high as possible. Still, not ideal. At least today I was able to wear the maternity jeans that do fit. (And there goes way more information than I'm sure anyone every cared to read about my clothes. So be it.)
Food cravings/aversions: Mostly just food in general. An hour or so after dinner, I hanker for a snack. I bought a jar of peanuts a few weeks ago to make peanut clusters, and I've been snacking on those quite a bit, despite the fact that peanuts are my least favorite nut.
Symptoms: Lately I've been hearing my pulse in my ears. Apparently this may be due to the increased volume of blood pumping through my body. Also, the other night I sneezed and I'm 95% sure I would have wet my pants a little had I not emptied my bladder two minutes prior. Oh, and at the beginning of the week I definitely started crying after Jacob reminded me to properly turn the Wii off all the way when I finished using it. Ridiculous.
Currently looking forward to: Getting pants that fit! I do believe some shopping is in order. Not that I necessarily like shopping . . . at ALL. But it will be nice to be able to get dressed without panicking about what to wear. Also, I'm looking forward to getting the heat fixed in my classroom. It hasn't been working properly since we came back from break. (I can wear a sweater and a coat and STILL be cold these days.)
Realization of the week: I'm nervous about breastfeeding! I want it to be a good experience and I know it's best for the baby, but I keep hearing accounts of how difficult and painful it can be. I need to read a book or go to a class or something to get better prepared, I think.
Milestones: Baby is practicing her breathing. And according to some calculations, I might be in my third trimester -- according to others, I won't be until next week. But still. Three months from tomorrow until my due date. Oh snap!
Other tidbits: I think I've been shedding less. I mean, I still shed when I wash or comb my hair, but not the massive quantities I usually do. Which probably means I'm going to lose hair by the handful after giving birth.

How far along? 26 weeks.
Size of baby: Now the size of a head of lettuce, she's about 14 inches long and weighs just under two pounds.
Sleep: Again, the pattern of waking up in the middle of the night continues. Usually it's because I'm sooo thirsty. I've taken to keeping a water bottle on my nightstand, and a couple of nights it's been nearly completely drained by the time I've woken up for the day. On a related note, I've woken up all sweaty and gross several times this week as well. I'm not sure if that's due to the "heater effect" of the baby finally kicking in (in which case, I wish it would be in effect during the day, too, when I'm all bundled up in multiple layers), or the fact that I go to bed with multiple blankets.
Total weight gain: +13 lbs. I've decided to go by my pre-IVF weight, not the weight my OB first recorded. It's less frightening that way.
Unglamorous body changes: My chilblains have gotten out of hand this week. My poor toes.
Best moment this week: On Monday Jacob and I went on a date to an Octapella concert, and then afterward we hit up Applebee's for half-off appetizers. Apparently 2013 was the year of concerts for us. We went nearly 4 years together without ever going to a concert, and then we went to three in the space of two months. Runner up belongs to New Year's Eve: we met up with my brother- and sister-in-law and their kids at a mall to hang out while they're in Utah, and then we went to Heather's house to ring in the new year with a movie, games, and delicious foodstuffs.
Movement: This may sound strange, but last Saturday I did prenatal yoga for the first time in probably a month, and then the next morning I didn't even look pregnant anymore. Along with that, the baby's movements were a lot less noticeable, which made me a little nervous. It's possible that the yoga really did "increase space for the growing baby", like the instructor says, and that my uterus moved more toward my back or something. Or maybe it's all in my head. Anyway, while her movements aren't quite as strong as they were last week, from the way my belly was spasming last night, I think baby girl had the hiccups. Aw. She takes after me. I could feel her movements on both the right and left side of my belly, which was a first for me.
Maternity clothes: I wore a couple maternity tops from my cousin this week, not because I needed them, necessarily, but because her clothes are cuter than mine.
Food cravings/aversions: Not a food item, but I can't get enough water. Is excessive thirst a symptom of diabetes? I want to say I read a book where it was. Hopefully I don't have it! I guess I'll find out in a few weeks.
Symptoms: I had heartburn a few nights this week -- not necessarily a burning feeling in my chest, but more like an acid taste at the back of my throat. And my back has been a little achey here and there. Still, can't complain.
Currently looking forward to: Getting the second bedroom ready for baby. It has a loooong way to go.
Realization of the week: Going through the struggle of infertility has been by far the hardest thing I've been through thus far. But looking back, we're in such a better position to bring a baby into this world now than we were three years ago. Our relationship is stronger, and we're much more financially secure. If I had gotten pregnant when we first started trying, I never would have even looked for a teaching position, and Jacob would've been the sole provider all this time. I suppose there would've been no need to get a second car or to pay for IVF, but things definitely would have been tight.
Milestones: At 26 weeks, baby girl has approached viability -- meaning, should I go into labor today (heaven forbid), she would have an 80 to 90 percent shot at surviving. This also means that Jacob and I no longer qualify to get any money back from our IVF cycle -- had I given birth yesterday, we would've received a portion back with the guarantee plan we paid for. Keep the money, I say! I'll take a healthy baby instead, thanks.
Other tidbits: Costco has a coupon out for diapers and wipes, so yesterday Jacob and I bought two boxes of each, for a total of close to 400 diapers and 2,250 wipes. We had a debate over which sizes to get -- two boxes of size one or a box each of size one and two? -- which was settled with a phone call to my sister. (In case you're burning with curiosity, we bought a box of each, since we don't know how big baby girl will be or how fast she'll grow.) So, while we still need to get newborn size diapers, we should have the essentials covered -- right? Carseat, stroller, pack and play, diapers, clothes. Never mind the fact that everything is still packaged up in boxes or bags.

How far along? 25 weeks.
Size of baby: The website I've been looking at finally gives a new range of length and weight: 13.6 to 14.8 inches and 1.5 to 2.5 pounds. It now says she's the size of a cauliflower. A cauliflower? Really? A different website says that at this point, baby girl is 13 inches long and about 1.5 pounds. Grow, baby, grow!
Sleep: This has been the week of waking up in the middle of the night. Well, if by "middle of the night" you mean "between 4 and 6 in the morning." I suppose it could be worse. I've woken up I think every single day this week due to one of the following: needing to use the bathroom; being too cold; being too hot; being thirsty; hearing unfamiliar noises. The day after Christmas I slept 12 hours (excluding waking early in the morning). The goal is to get back on track before I have to go back to school.
Total weight gain: No change from last week. Shocking, considering all of the delicious foods I've indulged in the last few days. I'm sure it'll catch up to me. Time to start exercising again!
Unglamorous body changes: Four of my fingernails broke this week. It was tragic.
Best moment this week: I don't think I can pick a single moment of the week as the best one. It's been so great! Jacob and I celebrated our anniversary by seeing The Piano Guys, and we were able to stay at my sister's house for a few days with my parents to celebrate Christmas. We completed two puzzles, saw the Spanish Fork Festival of Lights, had our traditional holiday meals, played games with my aunt's family, made a candy train, and generally made merry. It was great. And over too soon.
Movement: She's getting stronger! Her kicks are definitely more noticeable. Last night I was wearing a sweatshirt and covered with a blanket, and when she was kicking I could see my stomach move even through all those layers. She's also gotten into a habit of moving to one side of my belly and pushing out with her whole body, which is a strange sensation. I don't know if this is even physically possible at this point, but every now and again it feels like she's wedged a foot behind my ribcage.
Maternity clothes: While visiting my sister, Heather let me wear a pair of her maternity pants and a top and it was glorious. Then my cousin Angel let me borrow a tub of her maternity clothes. I have yet to go through them all to see which ones fit, but can I just say: Maternity jeans, where have you been all my life? So comfy!
Food cravings/aversions: Again, I've not been afraid to overload on the chocolate and sweets. I do believe a detox is in order.
Symptoms: You may call me Sir Toots-a-Lot. TMI?
Currently looking forward to: Enjoying the rest of my winter break by reading and spending time with Jacob. Also, going on dates by using the vouchers we purchased for each other as Christmas gifts.
Realization of the week: We're bringing a little girl into this world -- a girl that we're responsible for taking care of and teaching! It's a huge responsibility! I want to raise her to be intelligent, and compassionate, and brave, and righteous -- but how on earth do you do that? It seems like a monumental task.
Other tidbits: We only have about 3 and a half months left to get ready for baby girl's arrival. Ack! So much to do, so little time!

How far along? 24 weeks.
Size of baby: My website source still lists the same range for weight and length as the previous two weeks, but baby girl has been upgraded to the size of a cantaloupe, apparently.
Sleep: Oh, sleeping is just grand. I still get really weird dreams and have a hard time leaving the coziness of the bed, but I feel rested enough when I wake up. And I'll be even more rested these next two weeks of winter break! Hallelujah!
Total weight gain: +11 pounds. +15 according to my doctor, but we'll just pretend I'm only up 11.
Unglamorous body changes: Nothing new, to my knowledge.
Best moment this week: Finding out our good friends finally received a foster placement! I'm beyond thrilled for them. They're such good parents and so deserving of this opportunity!
Movement: A couple days ago I decided to watch my stomach while she was moving to see if I could see movement from the outside, and I think I was able to catch a couple kicks! Perhaps I was imagining it . . . but perhaps I wasn't.
Maternity clothes: I'm gong to need to get some maternity jeans soon. The ones I have are getting snuuug. It hurts to bend over at the waist or sit down sometimes because the waistband digs into my skin.
Food cravings/aversions: I want to eat all the chocolates! Maybe it's because it's close to Christmas, but I just want all the sweets. We still don't have much in the house, which is probably a good thing, or I'd eat us out of house and home.
Symptoms: I think my bladder has shrunk. I always need to use the loo these days!
Currently looking forward to: Celebrating our four year anniversary by going out to dinner and seeing The Piano Guys in concert tomorrow! Also, spending more time with my family with Christmas festivities. It should be grand. And finally having time to read my library books!
Realization of the week: Our little girl is going to have Jacob wrapped around her little finger. He's so good at interacting with our niece Kayla. I can't wait to see him be a dad! (Well, I can wait another 16 weeks or so . . . let's give this baby plenty of time to develop before making her grand entrance.)
Other tidbits: As part of our class Christmas party -- which was a Hawaiian luau theme -- the students had a hula hooping station to see who could hula the longest. I decided to give it a go and was able to keep the hula hoop around my waist for an impressive 1.2 seconds. I mentioned to a student, "I'm not very good at this," and she replied, "Yeah, well, you also have a baby!" I'm not quite sure that was the reason for my poor execution, but we'll roll with it. Also, one of my students gave me a baby outfit as a Christmas present! It was pretty adorable.

How far along? 23 weeks. I think I can officially say I'm five months along!
Size of baby: Baby girl is now the size of a grapefruit! The average length and weight is the same as last week. Probably because it was such a large range last time.
Sleep: It's getting a little trickier to roll over in bed, but it's definitely still manageable. I wake up sometimes in order to change positions.
Total weight gain: Still haven't stepped on a scale since . . . I don't know when. Hopefully I'm not in for a nasty shock at my appointment this week!
Unglamorous body changes: My belly button is shallower! I just noticed this after I got out of the shower yesterday. I'm on my way to having an outie! (It's still quite a ways away, but I imagine it's bound to happen eventually.)
Best moment this week: I asked Jacob what I should say was my best moment this week. His response: "Just me, baby." Well, I did get to take today off to attend his commencement ceremony, so sure, we'll go with that.
Movement: Apparently baby girl is settling in to her sleep cycles, sleeping 12 to 14 hours a day. I feel her most in the evening still.
Maternity clothes: Nothing new. I still can squeeze into (and button) a couple pairs of my pre-pregnancy pants, and I haven't purchased any maternity tops. I'm sure I'll have to break down and buy some maternity clothes soon, though.
Food cravings/aversions: Not much. Maybe clementines. And chocolate. (Not like we have any chocolate in the house.)
Symptoms: I've been surprisingly emotionally stable throughout this pregnancy, but over the weekend that changed. First, it started with my sobbing during a Christmas Cheer story. The next day I had a breakdown over the state of our second bedroom, which will eventually become the baby's room. Since my mother-in-law and mom came to Utah for Jacob's graduation, they are (or will be) staying in that room, and I was stressed about cleaning it out since it was disastrous. I threatened to throw everything in the bedroom away and the THIRD time I started crying about it (in the space of about 20 minutes), Jacob asked why I was crying again. "I don't know!" I wailed. "I'm PREGNANT!" (For those of you wondering, we did get it cleaned up to a presentable state, largely thanks to Jacob.)
Currently looking forward to: Finishing our Christmas shopping. Which requires starting our Christmas shopping. Also! We're going to two concerts this upcoming weekend -- The Piano Guys and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. And both my parents will be in Utah come Friday! (Remember that time my Mom is flying to California on Sunday only to drive back to Utah 4 days later?)
Realization of the week: Babies don't come with snooze buttons! It's definitely going to be a shock to our current sleeping schedules when we're waking up every couple of hours.
Other tidbits: I'm at the point where people either tell me things like "Where are you hiding that baby?" or "You're finally starting to look pregnant!" I think a lot of it depends on what clothes I'm wearing and how I'm standing or sitting.

Please note the Christmas decoration dangling from the ceiling.
How far along? 22 weeks 1 day.
Size of baby: Milo can do it, yes he can! Two part papaya and one part man! (Please tell me someone knows that reference.) Baby is now the size of a papaya. At this stage, the average fetus is 10.5 to 11.8 inches and 12.7 to 20.8 ounces. Let's not get too specific here, Internets.
Sleep: Lately I've been waking up before my alarm goes off but I have a hard time getting out of bed because it's so cold! The last couple of nights I've woken up early because I can't breathe. I shake my fist at this cold I got from Jacob.
Total weight gain: Your guess is as good as mine. One day I'll go back to the gym and weigh myself, but today is not that day.
Unglamorous body changes: I haven't really noticed anything significant.
Best moment this week: On Monday, we discovered that somebody had purchased this onesie and sent it to us! We don't know who it's from, and I was beyond thrilled! I've wanted it even before I got pregnant when I saw my former roommate's IVF twins wearing them in blue, but I had a hard time justifying the cost. I had put it on my Christmas wish list, and it was a great surprise to get in the mail! (Jacob DID shave on Monday as well, making it an extra-great day.)
Movement: A couple nights ago she was kicking up a storm for about ten minutes. Of course, as soon as Jacob put his hand on my belly to try to feel, she stopped moving. Little stinker.
Maternity clothes: I tried wearing the DI maternity pants again in hopes that I'd fill them out better, and yet again, I was hitching them up every five minutes.
Food cravings/aversions: I have not been afraid to down a lot of hot chocolate this week.
Symptoms: I had heartburn one night. My abdomen has been feeling a little more stretched, and I do believe I'm finally starting to show a little! The skin on my torso has been feeling a little itchy, so I've been lotioning up after showers and that's helped.
Currently looking forward to: Jacob's commencement ceremony on Friday! Well, perhaps I'm looking more forward to both our mothers coming than the actual ceremony itself, but I'm so proud of Jacob for graduating! Our fourth grade is also performing The Grinch who Stole Christmas for the school on Tuesday, and that should be fun. (It'll also be nice when it's over, because then I probably won't be teaching recorders for much longer after that, haha.)
Realization of the week: According to the weekly updates I get, baby girl can now taste everything I taste. Not quite sure how that works, but whatevs. Perhaps I should start eating more vegetables so she develops a palate for them. I have fruits, grains, and dairy covered. Vegetables . . . not quite so much.
Other tidbits: We now own a Pack-n-Play and a second car seat base!  We haven't opened the box yet. We just may stick a bow on it and wait until Christmas to open it -- especially if we don't get around to Christmas shopping for ourselves, ha. We have yet to get our car seat, but it's currently in transit, as well as our stroller.
